CV Writing Tips

To stand a better chance of getting an interview you have to be certain your CV is up to standard. Even the most suitable job applicants can miss out if they have a poor CV.
A CV should be between 2-4 pages and should contain the key information required for a particular job application. It is often a good idea to re-write a CV for different job applications depending on what the recruiter is asking for.
A few guidelines for writing an effective CV are:

Layout: keep the formatting simple and easy to read, fancy fonts, borders or graphics may make you stand out, but often for the wrong reasons. The focus of the recruiter should be on the content. A the top of the CV should be a brief summary, usually one paragraph and possibly bullitt points. This is a chance to sell yourself, explain who you are e.g. 'Experienced Mechanical Design Engineer And Project Manager', a brief description of what you have done and what you can do e.g. 'Managed Projects Up to £10m Value And Teams Of 20 Engineers'. This will be the first thing the recruiter reads so you what them to be eager to read more.

Eduction / Qualifications: Always start this section with the highest qualifications and include all relevant professional qualifications. Try to keep this section concise, if you hold a Masters' degree there is no need to go into great length about your GCSEs'.

Employment: Always start with current or most recent employment, include dates and explain any gaps. Job duties are best explained in bullett points and job titles and company names should be clearly highlighted or underlined. If there are several jobs with the same description of duties there is no need to repeat yourself. Explain reasons for leaving, in particular for any contract or temporary jobs and jobs which have not lasted long.

Additional Information: Make sure contact information; address, phone number and email are included, do not include personal information such as date of birth, marital status, religion etc, although very few people will discriminate these days it is better not to take that chance. Include some personal interests but be carefull what you write, for example 'Socialising' can be seen as partying every night!
